16/02/2022 Football – Two games in the Champions League tonight. Salzburg takes on Bayern Munich and Liverpool travel to play Inter Milan.
16/02/2022 Football – Champions League – Red Bull Salzburg v Bayern Munich
- Salzburg have six players missing through injury, with some of those excluded from their Champions League squad due to the severity of their problems.
- Winter arrival Ignace Van der Brempt, 19, is yet to debut for Salzburg but is certainly one for the future given the money spent to land him from Club Brugge.
- Oumar Solet may continue at centre-back for the time being as Jerome Onguene has only just returned from AFCON duty with losing finalists Cameroon.
- Brenden Aaronson was subject to intense January interest from Leeds but Salzburg managed to keep hold of the attacker and he will start here.
- Nicolas Capaldo and Antoine Bernede have emerged as starters in midfield for Salzburg since the winter break.
- Karim Adeyemi will most likely join Borussia Dortmund in the summer is the one to watch for Salzburg, though he wasn’t involved at the weekend.
- Julian Nagelsmann is unlikely to deploy Joshua Kimmich as the lone defensive midfielder after what happened at the weekend.
- The Bayern Munich head coach started Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry altogether against Bochum on Saturday and they lost 4-2.
- Dayot Upamecano wasn’t at the races at the weekend but may keep his place in defence as Lucas Hernandez is currently required at left-back with Alphonso Davies unavailable.
- Jamal Musiala tested positive for COVID last week but could return and make the matchday squad here.
- Manuel Neuer is out for up to six weeks in a real blow for Bayern, with Sven Ulreich set to continue in goal in his absence.

- Nicolo Barella is suspended for the first leg after his red card in Inter’s final group game. His absence is a huge blow for the home side. Arturo Vidal may deputise.
- Alessandro Bastoni will return in defence after missing their 1-1 draw with Napoli at the weekend through suspension.
- January signing Robin Gosens still isn’t fit so Ivan Perisic, who worked under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund from 2011-2013, will likely continue at left wing-back for the hosts.
- Edin Dzeko has scored in each of his last three matches against Liverpool. He scored home and away against them for Roma in the Champions League in 2017/18 and in his final Premier League encounter against them for Manchester City in 2015.
- Former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez only has two goals in nine career appearances against Liverpool but is another option in attack alongside Lautaro Martinez.
- Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted at changes for Wednesday’s match away to Inter.
- Jordan Henderson should be fine despite a nasty cut on his knee against Burnley at the weekend but he may drop out. Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain or Harvey Elliott will hope to replace the Liverpool captain.
- A dead leg prevent Diogo Jota from starting against Burnley but he will return here in place of Roberto Firmino.
- January signing Luis Diaz will hope to make a full European debut for Liverpool but will likely only make the bench unless Sadio Mane isn’t fit enough following his AFCON return.
- Ibrahima Konate could replace Joel Matip at centre-back with Joe Gomez now well down the pecking order.
- James Milner returns from suspension from Liverpool’s last group game in the competition.
