- Jesse Lingard will return to training on Monday after requesting a few days off to get his mind right after a failed deadline day move away.
- Edinson Cavani will also miss Friday’s FA Cup game after international duty with Uruguay, while Alex Telles and Fred are unlikely to be involved for similar reasons.
- Eric Bailly is back from AFCON with the Ivory Coast but an ankle injury will keep him sidelined. Victor Lindelof has been ill all week and he misses out too.
- Phil Jones could therefore make a second start of the season for United despite being free to leave on deadline day.
- Ralf Rangnick has confirmed Paul Pogba will return after missing United’s last 15 matches and could even start here.
- The United interim boss has also confirmed talented youngster Hannibal Mejbri will be in the squad to face Boro after returning from AFCON.
- Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw missed out through illness and injury, respectively, before the break but are both back in training and expected to start here.
- Jadon Sancho is also back but Mason Greenwood has been suspended by the club for the foreseeable future.
- Dean Henderson failed to secure a January move away and will hope to make just his third appearance of the season here.
- Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo all left late on in the January transfer window on loan deals.
- Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun will hope to make his full Middlesbrough debut against Manchester United following his January switch.
- Fellow new signing Riley McGree is in line for his Boro debut after joining from Birmingham in the middle of January.
- Former United academy graduate Paddy McNair will be desperate to start back at where it all started in his career. He is an option at centre-back or in central midfield.
- James Lea Siliki is still on AFCON duty with Camerron and won’t be available on Friday.

- Brentford loanee Charlie Goode carries over a minor hamstring problem and will face late fitness tests to determine his involvement here.
