Football 14/8/2021 – Manchester United v Leeds United

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Raphael Varane is not available for the welcome on Leeds on Saturday but Jadon Sancho will be involved in some capacity.
  • Dean Henderson is struggling with long-COVID and will miss out here, with David de Gea set to start the season in goal. Jesse Lingard misses our after testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Eric Bailly, Edinson Cavani and Amad Diallo are all back in the country but need to serve their period of isolation before they can return to training.
  • With Cavani unavailable and Marcus Rashford injured for several months, Anthony Martial will lead the line for the home side. He is only back from injury himself.
  • Donny van de Beek appears in competition with Paul Pogba to complete United’s midfield three, with Nemanja Matic and Bruno Fernandes taking the other two spots.
  • Marcelo Bielsa has admitted Kalvin Phillips may not be fit enough to start Leeds’ opener after his late return to pre-season, with Robin Koch ready to deputise if required.
  • Diego Llorente and summer signing Junior Firpo may not recover from injury in time for Leeds and the latter’s absence would be a big blow considering they let Ezgjan Alioski go in the summer. Stuart Dallas may be required at left-back on Saturday.

Football 14/8/2021 – Norwich v Liverpool

  • Norwich lost Emiliano Buendia over the summer but have so far managed to keep hold of Max Aarons and Todd Cantwell. The latter is actually an injury doubt heading into Saturday’s game with Liverpool.
  • Pre-season has been a bit of a nightmare for Norwich due to several positive COVID-19 cases but summer signing Milot Rashica and Grant Hanley are two of those back in training and available for this one.
  • Norwich signed Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea to replace Oliver Skipp, who returned to Tottenham over the summer. The Scotland international should be nailed on for a debut here. Former Nice midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou could join him.
  • Przemyslaw Placheta is still struggling with symptoms post COVID-19 and will not likely be involved here. Andrew Omobamidele has tonsillitis.
  • Andrew Robertson faces a short spell on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage sustained in pre-season. Konstantinos Tsimikas is set to deputise in his absence.
  • Jurgen Klopp has recovered Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez from long-term injuries for the new season but there is still a little bit more work for the latter pair to be back at full fitness. New signing Ibrahima Konate is also an option here.
  • Diogo Jota may have to settle for a place on the bench with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino still Klopp’s first-choice front three.
  • Curtis Jones will not feature away to Norwich due to the concussion protocol, Klopp has confirmed. With Jordan Henderson still working his way to full fitness, Liverpool fans will hope to see Naby Keita start. Thiago also started pre-season late so there is a chance James Milner gets the nod here.
