Premier League 12/9/2021 – Leeds United v Liverpool

  • Marcelo Bielsa has fielded a back three in recent draws with Everton and Burnley but may revert to his usual 4-1-4-1 having dominated possession in the last meeting between these sides in that formation.
  • Mateusz Klich and Junior Firpo tested positive for COVID-19 before the break and will need assessing prior to this one.
  • Klich’s absence would leave Leeds a bit short in midfield. Pascal Struijk may have to move forward as a result, while Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton are pushing for a first start.
  • New signing Dan James was in line to come in for an immediate debut but Raphinha is among those now permitted to play by the Premier League, who have agreed to defy FIFA’s ban on players that didn’t travel to South America.
  • Harvey Elliott will be available on Sunday despite withdrawing from the England U21 squad in midweek. Klopps is less confident about Takumi Minamino’s availability, not that he would have started.
  • Diogo Jota looks safe to continue up front in the likely absence of Roberto Firmino.
  • The latter, along with Alisson and Fabinho, had been banned by FIFA but have now been permitted to play by the Premier League.
  • Naby Keïta’s availability is in doubt with Liverpool working hard to get the midfielder out of Guinea after an attempted coup in the capital.

  • Robbie Neilson made just one change in personnel as Hearts followed their 1-1 draw against Aberdeen at Tynecastle, with a 2-0 victory over Dundee United at Tannadice in their last Scottish Premiership match.
  • Stephen Kingsley appeared to have contracted COVID, so missed the trip to Tannadice and could return here. Josh Ginnelly dropped out in Hearts’ only change, in order for Ben Woodburn to make his debut against United.
  • Hearts could hand a derby day debut to Barrie McKay. The former Swansea City winger joined the Jambos, after his deal with the Swans expired, supposedly rejecting the visitors in order to sign with the hosts.
  • Jack Ross also made just one change in personnel as Hibernian followed their 2-2 draw with Dundee at Dens Park, responding with a 2-0 victory over Livingston at Easter Road in their last Scottish Premiership match.
  • Club captain Paul Hanlon has been out with a head injury. Chris Cadden is nearing a return, yet to make an appearance so far this season due to a thigh injury.
  • However, the change in question saw Alex Gogic make way for Kevin Nisbet.
  • New signing James Scott made his Hibernian debut at Dens. However, it was the returning marksman that opened the scoring with their main man Martin Boyle sealing the deal. Injured whilst on international duty, the extent of Boyle’s injury is unknown.
