The fourth FA Cup final was the first that could not be settled in one afternoon. Royal Engineers, beaten by Wanderers in 1872 and by Oxford University in 1874, met Old Etonians at the Kennington Oval on Saturday 13 March 1875. The Etonians were in their first final, and the conditions favoured them from the start: a howling gale blew straight down the ground, and under the laws then in force the teams had to change ends after every goal.[1][7]

Old Etonians won the toss and took the wind. They pressed throughout the first half and went ahead after half an hour when Alexander Bonsor curled a corner-kick through the posts, the wind doing most of the work. The change of ends that followed put the Engineers in front of the gale, and within five minutes they were level. Pelham von Donop carried the ball down the right and placed it in front of goal, where Henry Renny-Tailyour finished the move. Soon afterwards Cuthbert Ottaway was carried off with an injured ankle after a collision with Richard Ruck, and the Etonians played a man short for the rest of the match.[7][1]

The Engineers dominated the second half but could not find a winner. A pre-match agreement provided for an extra half-hour if the scores were level, and the additional period was played without a further goal. The Observer reported that the Engineers wore scarlet and blue jerseys and stockings with blue serge knickerbockers, while the Old Etonians were in blue and white, which made the two sides easy to tell apart.[1][7]

The replay was fixed for the following Tuesday, only three days later. The weather was calmer, but Old Etonians arrived weakened: Ottaway's ankle had not recovered, and three other players who had played in the first match were unavailable. The Engineers fielded the same side. Two goals from Henry Renny-Tailyour, the first after a quarter of an hour and the second with a quarter of the match remaining, settled the cup at last. The final score was 2-0.[7][1]

It was the first replay in FA Cup final history, and it began a small tradition: fourteen finals in all would need a second match. For the Engineers it was a first and only cup win; they reached one more final, in 1878, and lost again. For Renny-Tailyour it was a personal triumph. The regimental journal credits him with all three of his side's goals across the two matches, and he remains the only person to have represented Scotland at both association football and rugby union.[7][9][3]

Changes from the first match

• Edward Drummond-Moray started in goal, with Charles Farmer moving to forward. Drummond-Moray was one of several players unavailable for the first match through other commitments.[6][5]
• Matthew Farrer, Alfred Lubbock and Thomas Hammond came into the side. They replaced Albert Thompson, Robert Benson and William Kenyon-Slaney.[6][5]
• Cuthbert Ottaway was missing. He had not recovered from the ankle injury sustained in the first match.[1][7]
