02/04/2023 Football – EFL Cup Final – Bolton v Plymouth

Plymouth Argyle manager Steven Schumacher is looking forward to the Papa Johns Trophy final with Bolton and wants his team to relish the occasion. The League One leaders face fellow promotion contenders Bolton on Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Schumacher wants his team to improve on their last Wembley appearance in 2016, where they lost badly to AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final. Despite the pressure, Schumacher is encouraging his team to be positive and try to win the game. He also wants them to take the opportunity of getting national exposure and reward their fans who have sold a huge number of tickets.

The Pilgrims will be without Adam Randall and defender James Bolton due to injuries, but striker Sam Cosgrove is fit again and in the squad. Bolton has no injury concerns and is at full strength for their trip to the capital. Schumacher has used 30 players in this season’s competition and says picking the matchday squad of 18 will be tough. Bolton is fifth in the table, 16 points behind their opponents, with eight games of the regular season left to play.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt is excited about the prospect of taking the team to Wembley for the first time since their FA Cup semi-final loss against Stoke City in 2011. He is hoping to enjoy the experience but also wants to keep his eyes on the promotion run-in. After the game, he wants to focus his team’s minds on the eight big games still to come in the regular season.
