Gareth Southgate, England’s football manager, says that striker Harry Kane will have added motivation to break Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record when they play Italy on Thursday. Kane has scored 53 goals for England, equal to Rooney’s record. Southgate is confident that Kane has put his missed penalty in the World Cup quarter-final behind him and will perform well in the match. The game is England’s first since losing to France in the quarter-final of the World Cup. It is also the start of their qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany.
England are among the favourites for the tournament after reaching the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020. However, Southgate says that past results will be irrelevant and that England must work hard to qualify again. While some members of England’s squad have pulled out due to injury, the rest are fit to play against Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Italy will wear a special message on their shirts for Gianluca Vialli, a member of their coaching staff who died in January following a battle with cancer. Italy manager Roberto Mancini believes the fixture between Italy and England has become “a bit of a clasico” over recent years. The two nations are set to play each other for the fourth time in two years.
The game is being played in Naples, where there have been concerns about security following violent clashes between football fans in the city. However, Southgate played down the issue and said he was excited to play in a city that loves football with a great history. Mancini also rejected the idea of trouble at the game, saying that it has always been the away fans that have caused problems.
