AFCON 20/1/2022 – Carabao Cup – Arsenal v Liverpool

  • This game is under threat after Arsenal couldn’t field a team against Tottenham on Sunday, though the Gunners hope to welcome back up to five players here.
  • Cedric Soares is unlikely to recover from injury in time but Mikel Arteta hopes to have Martin Odegaard,Takehiro Tomiyasu, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe back for Thursday.
  • Granit Xhaka is suspended for two matches after his straight red card in the 0-0 draw at Anfield last week.
  • Given how short on numbers Arsenal are, their decision to loan out Pablo Mari, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Folarin Balogun has been criticised. They have also terminated Sead Kolasinac’s contract.
  • Should this game go ahead then Mikel Arteta may have to use Ben White in central midfield with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny away at AFCON.
  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off injured against Brentford at the weekend and will miss out here.
  • Curtis Jones could move into the front three as a result with James Milner returning in midfield. Takumi Minamino is an alternative option, albeit on the left wing.
  • Jurgen Klopp may ponder a change at centre-back with Ibrahima Konate or Joe Gomez coming in for Joel Matip.
