05/07/2023 Football – Under-21 Championship – Israel v England

Despite their impressive performance in the tournament so far, England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley is cautious about labeling his team as the “favorites” in the upcoming Euro Under-21 Championship semi-final against Israel, scheduled to take place in Georgia this Wednesday. The Young Lions, who have managed to keep their net untouched throughout the tournament, are aiming to reach the competition’s final for the first time since 2009. They have already demonstrated their prowess by defeating Israel in the group stage.

Carsley has emphasised to his team the importance of expressing themselves on the field. He commends their mature approach to each game and challenge, and stresses the importance of focusing on the task at hand rather than getting too caught up in anticipation. He recalls his own experiences as a player, warning against the mental exhaustion that can come from overthinking a game before it has even begun.

The semi-final will be held at the Batumi Arena, with the victors set to face either Spain or Ukraine in the final. Carsley believes that the excitement should be reserved for the day of the game, and he is not underestimating Israel, despite England’s previous victory over them.

Unfortunately, England will have to make do without Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, who has been forced to pull out due to an ankle injury sustained in the quarter-final victory over Portugal. Additionally, West Ham’s Ben Johnson and Norwich’s Max Aarons will be absent due to suspensions.

Carsley has a wealth of talent to choose from, with many of his squad members regularly featuring in the Premier League and some having already secured high-value transfer deals. He cites the examples of Morgan Gibbs-White’s £42.5m move to Nottingham Forest from Wolves, Anthony Gordon’s £45m transfer from Everton to Newcastle, and James Trafford’s imminent £15m move from Manchester City to Burnley. He believes that these high price tags are now the norm for young players, and praises his squad for handling the pressure with grace and humility.

Aarons, who is rumored to be on the verge of a lucrative move away from Norwich, agrees that the price tags become irrelevant once the players are on the pitch. He is not surprised by the high transfer fees given the talent within the group, but emphasizes that in a semi-final, the playing field is leveled and performance on the night is what truly matters.
