  • Aaron Ramsey scored his first goal for Rangers at the weekend in a boost for Wales after a very indifferent start to life in Scotland.
  • Gareth Bale wasn’t in the Real Madrid squad that lost to Barcelona on Sunday and hasn’t actually played in well over a month. His fitness will need assessing but it would be a surprise if he didn’t start this one.
  • Harry Wilson and Brennan Johnson have been hugely impressive in the Championship this season and will both be pushing for starts on Thursday.
  • Wayne Hennessey should reclaim his spot in goal as Danny Ward is not available for Wales.
  • Robert Page has a slight issue at centre-back as neither Joe Rodon nor Chris Mepham have played a tremendous amount of football. The former has virtually disappeared at club level.
  • Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell is suspended.
  • After being chucked around in different positions for a few years, David Alaba has been used almost exclusively on the left hand side during qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
  • Daniel Bachmann emerged as Austria’s first-choice during qualification but he has seen little football for Watford this season so Heinz Lindner could be a surprise starter.
  • Austria head coach Franco Foda has been forced into four changes to his original squad with Florian Grillitsch, Christopher Trimmel, Philipp Lienhart and Dejan Ljubicic all pulling out. The former pair would have started against Wales.
  • Andreas Weimann of Championship outfit Bristol City has been called back to the national set-up after a seven-year absence.
