  • Dominic Thompson was forced off injured late on against Manchester City on Wednesday but could make this one.
  • Rico Henry is expected to miss Brentford’s next two matches but Thomas Frank has confirmed he hopes to have Bryan Mbeumo back this weekend.
  • Sergi Canos should earn a recall for Brentford and may even have to play on the left with Henry out and doubts over Thompson.
  • Christian Norgaard will return in midfield for Brentford after missing their 1-0 defeat to City through suspension. Vitaly Janelt could return from COVID.
  • Kristoffer Ajer is back working with the group but a return in the FA Cup next week is more realistic for the defender.
  • Tyrone Mings is suspended for Aston Villa owing to an accumulation of yellow cards in the Premier League. Axel Tuanzebe or Kortney Hause will deputise.
  • Steven Gerrard will hope to have Ashley Young back though he is still dealing with a fractured toe.
  • Morgan Sanson will hope to have done enough to keep his place in the side from the 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last time Villa played.
  • However, John McGinn is back available for Villa after missing the defeat to Chelsea on Boxing Day.
  • Gerrard’s experiment with a 4-3-1-2 formation to pair Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins up front didn’t exactly go to plan against Chelsea and the former may drop out here.

  • Reece James is out for around eight weeks with a hamstring injury suffered on Wednesday night. Cesar Azpilicueta may be required at right wing-back.
  • Andreas Christensen is still struggling with a back injury that forced him off at half-time against Brighton in midweek but Thiago Silva is back in training ahead of Sunday.
  • There were fears N’Golo Kante faced another spell on the sidelines with a knee injury but he came off the bench against Brighton.
  • It will be interesting to see whether Romelu Lukaku starts after his comments in the week about his future.
  • Timo Werner and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are unlikely to make Sunday’s welcome of Liverpool.
  • Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Naby Keita all jet off to AFCON after Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea.
  • Andy Robertson is still suspended so Kostas Tsimikas will continue at left-back here.
  • Ibrahima Konate or Joe Gomez are on standby if Joel Matip rotates out the side.
  • Thiago has been ruled out with Takumi Minamino, though the latter wouldn’t have started.
  • Jurgen Klopp has confirmed a couple of new positive COVID cases but it’s unclear who.
