Playing Style

Ardie Savea brings a distinctive approach to the number eight position. Their technical skills, combined with an instinctive understanding of the game's tactical demands, allow them to influence matches in ways that extend beyond their primary responsibilities.

Career Biography

Ardie Savea is the most destructive ball-carrier in world rugby. The Hurricanes and All Blacks number eight combines raw power with explosive acceleration, creating a carrying threat that no defence in the world has consistently managed to contain. Savea's ability to beat multiple defenders and generate offloads in contact makes him the focal point of New Zealand's forward play.

Savea's evolution from a specialist openside flanker to a dominant number eight has been one of the most significant tactical developments in All Blacks rugby. His incredible engine allows him to maintain his carrying intensity for the full 80 minutes, and his work rate at the breakdown ensures he contributes defensively as well as in attack.

His performances at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where he was widely regarded as the player of the tournament despite New Zealand's final defeat, cemented his status as one of the all-time great All Blacks loose forwards.
