Rugby union is a sport defined by the diversity of its positions and the specialist skills each one demands. A full squad of fifteen is split into two broad groups — eight forwards and seven backs — and every role within those units carries unique responsibilities that shape the flow of a match. Among the forwards, the front row of loosehead prop, hooker and tighthead prop anchors the scrum and drives the set piece. Second rows, or locks, provide lineout prowess and physicality in the tight exchanges, while the back row of two flankers and a number eight combines breakdown work, ball-carrying and defensive intensity. Behind the scrum, the half-backs — scrum-half and fly-half — dictate the tempo of play and link forwards to backs. The centre pairing offers a blend of power and creativity in midfield, wingers provide finishing speed on the flanks, and the full-back reads the game from the back field, fielding kicks and launching counter-attacks.

At Whatchan Rugby we cover the leading players from across the international and club game. You will find profiles of stars who compete in the Six Nations, The Rugby Championship, the Premiership, the United Rugby Championship and on the World Cup stage. Each profile includes career highlights, positional detail and key stats so you can compare players across countries and competitions. Whether you follow England, Ireland, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Wales or Scotland, use the filters below to browse by nation or by position group and discover the athletes who define modern rugby union.
