Playing Style

Itoje is a modern hybrid forward who operates at lock or blindside flanker with equal effectiveness. His engine is extraordinary for a man of his size, covering defensive ground that most back-rowers would struggle to match. He plays on the edge of the laws, mastering the art of the legal nuisance at the breakdown.

In attack, Itoje is a powerful carrier who generates front-foot ball through the tight channels. His hands are soft enough to deliver offloads, and his ability to win turnovers creates attacking opportunities from defensive situations.

I want to be the most difficult person to play against in world rugby. I want the opposition to dread seeing my name on the teamsheet.

Career Biography

Maro Itoje is the most complete forward in world rugby. His combination of athleticism, intelligence, and competitive ferocity makes him virtually unplayable on his day. Since bursting onto the international scene during England's 2016 Six Nations Grand Slam, Itoje has been a cornerstone of every team he has represented.

What sets Itoje apart from other second rows is his ability to influence matches in ways that extend far beyond the traditional lock's remit. He is an exceptional lineout operator, both as a jumper and a disruptor of opposition ball. His work at the breakdown is relentless, and his ability to slow down opposition ball — often through perfectly legal interventions that referees find difficult to penalise — has made him the most feared defensive forward in the game.

Itoje's carrying ability in the tight channels gives England a genuine ball-playing option in the second row. He rarely goes backwards in contact and has the handling skills to deliver offloads from the tackle. His defensive reads are outstanding; he consistently makes tackles beyond his defensive channel, covering ground that players of his size should not be able to cover.

A two-time British and Irish Lions tourist, Itoje has established himself as one of the first names on any combined Home Nations teamsheet. His leadership is vocal and demanding, setting standards that elevate those around him.
