United Rugby Championship
The cross-border professional league spanning Wales, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa and Italy — sixteen teams contesting one of rugby’s most geographically diverse club competitions.
What is the URC?
The United Rugby Championship is a professional club competition that brings together teams from five rugby-playing nations into a single league structure. It is the successor to the Pro14 (and before that the Celtic League), rebranded and expanded in 2021 when four South African franchises joined following their departure from Super Rugby. The result is a competition unlike any other in club rugby: matches that begin in the drizzle of a Friday evening in Llanelli can be followed, the next day, by fixtures played under the high-altitude sun of Pretoria.
The Teams
The URC comprises sixteen teams drawn from five countries:
Welsh Regions
- Scarlets — based in Llanelli, west Wales
- Ospreys — based in Swansea
- Cardiff Rugby — based at the Arms Park, Cardiff
- Dragons RFC — based in Newport
Scottish Teams
- Edinburgh Rugby — based at the DAM Health Stadium
- Glasgow Warriors — based at Scotstoun Stadium
Irish Provinces
- Leinster Rugby — based in Dublin, the dominant force of the modern URC era
- Munster Rugby — based in Limerick, with a storied European pedigree
- Ulster Rugby — based in Belfast
- Connacht Rugby — based in Galway
South African Teams
- Bulls — based in Pretoria
- Stormers — based in Cape Town
- Sharks — based in Durban
- Lions — based in Johannesburg
Italian Teams
- Benetton Rugby — based in Treviso
- Zebre Parma — based in Parma
Format
The regular season sees each team play eighteen matches, a mixture of home and away fixtures determined by a schedule that balances intra-regional derbies with cross-conference encounters. Teams earn standard league points: four for a win, two for a draw, with try-scoring and narrow-defeat bonus points available. At the season’s end, the top eight qualify for the knockout phase, culminating in a grand final hosted by the highest-ranked remaining team.
The addition of the South African teams has introduced logistical challenges — particularly around travel and time zones — but has unquestionably raised the competition’s physical intensity and global profile. South African sides brought a confrontational, power-based approach that has forced the Celtic and Italian teams to adapt.
Irish Dominance
Leinster have been the competition’s outstanding team for much of its existence, regularly finishing at or near the top of the standings. Their depth of squad, coaching infrastructure and access to centrally contracted Irish international players give them an advantage that few other URC sides can match. Munster, though less dominant than in their European heyday, remain a formidable force, while the South African franchises — particularly the Stormers and Bulls — have quickly established themselves as title contenders.
