01/07/2023 Football – England v Portugal

Sarina Wiegman, the England women’s national football team coach, is not worried about the lack of games before the 2023 Women’s World Cup. England, the European champions, will play their first match since April against Portugal on Saturday. Following that, they will travel to Australia for a behind-closed-doors friendly against Canada on July 14, just eight days before their opening World Cup game against Haiti. Wiegman believes that the schedule, despite allowing only two games before the tournament, is the best possible preparation considering the team’s travel requirements. England captain Millie Bright is confident of being available for the World Cup opener despite her ongoing knee injury. Jordan Nobbs is unavailable, but Alex Greenwood, who suffered a knock in training, is fit to play. Georgia Stanway is expected to earn her 50th cap for England in the match against Portugal, who will be making their World Cup debut.
