23/07/2023 Football – Women’s World Cup – Netherlands v Portugal

As the sun rose on July 23, 2023, the world turned its attention to the FIFA Women’s World Cup match between the Netherlands and Portugal. The first half ended with the Netherlands leading 1-0.

The Teams

The Dutch team, arranged in a 3-5-2 formation, was led by their captain Sherida Spitse, with Victoria Pelova as a player to keep an eye on. On the other side, Portugal, playing in a 4-3-3 formation, had no reported injuries. The youngest player in their squad, Kika Nazareth, already had an impressive record of 26 caps and 6 goals.

The History and Predictions

The Netherlands, who made it to the finals in 2019 under Sarina Wiegman’s guidance, have since seen a couple of coaching changes. Portugal, making their debut in this tournament, have had a historical encounter with the Dutch in the Euros, where the Netherlands emerged victorious with a 3-2 score. The Dutch team was then coached by Mark Parsons, and is now under the leadership of Andries Jonker. Given the recent performance fluctuations, a score draw seemed a plausible outcome.

23/07/2023 Football – Women’s World Cup – France v Jamaica

Both France and Jamaica have faced disputes in the past year, with France undergoing a coaching change and Jamaica struggling with their federation and lack of support. This lack of preparation may impact Jamaica’s performance in the World Cup.

Facts

  • Corinne Diacre coached France, but she was controversial and got sacked in March of this year. Herve Renard is the current coach.
  • Jamaica’s dispute has been with their federation, leading to cancelled friendlies and the need to crowd-fund their way to the World Cup due to insufficient support.
  • This is only the second time Jamaica has qualified for the tournament, and the lack of preparation may affect their performance.
