Michael O’Neill, the manager of the Northern Ireland national football team, has said that he will not let personal emotion affect his focus on the team’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Finland. O’Neill, who led Northern Ireland to the Euro 2016 finals during his first tenure as manager, was reappointed to the role in December 2021. Ahead of the match, O’Neill called on fans to focus on supporting the team rather than him personally. Northern Ireland won their opening qualifier against San Marino 2-0 and O’Neill has a fully-fit squad for the Finland match.

O’Neill has a strong record at Windsor Park in Belfast, which was a major factor in Northern Ireland’s first-ever qualification for the Euros in 2016. He has called on fans to support the team and help create a positive atmosphere that will benefit the players, especially younger members of the squad. Northern Ireland will need to beat teams close to them in the world rankings if they are to have a chance of qualifying from Group F, and O’Neill is expecting a difficult match against Finland, who came within eight minutes of earning a draw away to top seeds Denmark on Thursday.
