Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. All prices are now in euros.

The fixed conversion rate was 1.95583 лв = €1. Prices that were, for example, 3,90 лв are now €2. The word for euro in Bulgarian is евро (evro) — it does not change in the plural. One cent is цент (tsent), plural цента (tsenta).

How to say any price clearly. Every example has audio.
In Bulgarian, евро never changes its form. So "one euro", "two euros", "ten euros" are all just едно евро, две евро, десет евро. Cents work slightly differently: един цент, два цента, десет цента. The price is read as a compound: три евро и петдесет цента (€3.50). Prices are written with a comma: €3,50.

How Bulgarians say long numbers in real contexts.
Phone numbers are read digit by digit, or sometimes in pairs. Addresses say the street name then номер (number). Age uses the structure на... години съм (I am ... years old — literally "at ... years I am").

Bulgaria’s euro coins — and why стотинки lives on
Bulgaria kept its own identity on the coins. Here is what you will find in your change.
When Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, it did not simply import generic euro coins. Like every eurozone country, Bulgaria chose its own national designs for the reverse side of all eight coins. The result is a set of coins full of Bulgarian history, saints and monuments — and they carry Bulgarian writing in Cyrillic script. Most importantly for language learners: the word printed on the 1–50 cent coins is not "cent" but стотинки — and this is correct and intentional.
💡 Why the coins say СТОТИНКИ and not CENT
Each EU country is permitted to use its own language on euro coins. Bulgaria chose to write СТОТИНКИ (stotinki) — the Bulgarian word for "hundredths" — on coins from 2 to 50 cents, and СТОТИНКА (stotinka) on the 1 cent coin. This is the singular/plural distinction: стотинка = one cent, стотинки = two or more cents. The word is identical to the old Bulgarian lev subunit (100 stotinki = 1 lev), now repurposed for the euro cent. So when you hear Bulgarians say петдесет стотинки, they mean 50 euro cents — not the old lev currency. The word has simply carried over.

📚 Three figures, three eras of Bulgarian identity
The coin designers chose deliberately: Paisius (€2) represents the cultural rebirth of the 18th century; Ivan of Rila (€1) represents the spiritual foundation of the 10th century; the Madara Horseman (small coins) represents the ancient First Bulgarian Empire of the 8th century. Together they span 1,200 years of Bulgarian history in your pocket.
💡 What to listen for at the till
In everyday speech, Bulgarians use both forms — цент and стотинки — for euro cents, with стотинки being the more natural Bulgarian word. You will hear: три евро и петдесет стотинки (€3.50) as often as три евро и петдесет цента. Both are correct. The coins themselves say стотинки, so that is the form to recognise first.
