Section 5

Bulgarian business culture

What to know before you walk into a Bulgarian office.

AreaBulgarian normPractical tip
GreetingsFirm handshake with eye contact. Men greet men; women may offer hand first.Always address people by title + surname until invited to use first names.
PunctualityExpected in formal business settings — though not always practised.Arrive on time; calling if late is essential.
Business cardsCommon and taken seriously. Present and receive with both hands.Have Bulgarian text on the reverse if possible.
HierarchyStrongly hierarchical — decisions go up the chain.Identify the decision-maker early; do not bypass the hierarchy.
RelationshipsPersonal relationships matter hugely — coffee/lunch before business is normal.Do not rush to business — small talk builds trust.
NegotiationIndirect; direct refusal is rare. "We will consider it" often means no.Read between the lines; silence is not agreement.
MealsBusiness lunches are common. Refusing food or drink can seem rude.Accept the first offer of coffee/rakia to build rapport.

💡 Лични отношения — relationships come first

Bulgarian business culture places very high value on лични отношения (personal relationships). Deals are made between people who trust each other, not just between companies. Investing time in relationship-building — through shared meals, social conversation and genuine interest in the person — is not a distraction from business; it IS the business. This is one of the most important cultural differences from Northern European and Anglo-American business styles.

  3. What are three important aspects of Bulgarian business culture that differ from Northern European norms?
  4. Write three sentences you would use to open a business presentation in Bulgarian.
Show answers

1. Free answer — use Уважаеми · Пиша Ви относно · потвърждавам · дневен ред · С уважение.

2. Предлагаме шестмесечен договор. При условие, че доставите до края на март, можем да увеличим бюджета.

3. Relationships first (лични отношения), strong hierarchy (identify decision-maker), indirect negotiation ("we will consider it" often means no).

4. E.g. Добър ден. Темата на моята презентация е... Ще разгледаме следните точки: първо..., второ..., трето...

💡 Tip: Writing by hand in Cyrillic is the fastest way to lock in new vocabulary. Even five minutes of handwriting beats reading the same words ten times.
