Please Note — Beta CourseThis is a beta of a language course, and at this stage, there will be mistakes. Although I strive for 100% accuracy, creating the material, and amending modules for over 60 modules, takes an awful lot of time. So please use this feedback form to tell me about the problem. I’ll try and rectify when I can. Some modules are more complete than others, and some, especially the more advanced ones, need a lot more work to bring them up to the required standard. All claims on the efficiency of the course are based on aspirational goals. Remember, this course is free, it has no ads, I just hope enough people are kind enough to buy me a coffee to make this venture worth while.

B1 — Pre-intermediate / IntermediateDay 50 of 60

Advanced
Reading Practice

Reading authentic Bulgarian is the bridge from textbook language to real fluency. Today you work through three different text types — a news article, a literary passage and an official notice — each with comprehension questions and vocabulary analysis.

📅 Day 50⏳ ~60 minutes🎤 Audio on every section✅ Quiz at the end
🔊 Speed:

🎯 Why this matters now

At B1, the real jump is not just grammar but register. You need to recognise how Bulgarian sounds in news, memory and narrative writing, and official public language. This lesson should feel like guided exposure to real Bulgarian reading, not just passive text blocks.

The goal is not to understand every word on first contact. The goal is to learn how to read strategically, recognise patterns, and stay calm when the register becomes denser.

🎤 Scene-setting intro

💡 B1 reading strategies

1. Skim first — read the whole text quickly for main idea before studying details. 2. Use context — unknown words often have clues in surrounding text. 3. Identify text type — news, literature and official documents each have distinct vocabulary and register. 4. Focus on verbs — Bulgarian verbs carry most of the meaning; identify subject + verb first. 5. Mark unknowns — read to the end before looking anything up.

Section 1

Text 1 — News article

A newspaper-style article on a topical subject.

The tourism sector in Bulgaria is recording record growth for the second consecutive year, the Ministry of Tourism announced. The number of foreign tourists has grown by over fifteen percent compared to the previous year, with the main markets remaining Germany, Romania and the United Kingdom.

The seaside resorts along the Black Sea coast continue to attract mass tourism, but growing interest is also being observed in mountain destinations — especially Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. The growth of so-called "adventure tourism" — including mountain biking, rafting and eco-hikes — has been recorded by all major operators.

Despite the optimistic figures, industry organisations warn that a shortage of qualified labour remains a major challenge. "Finding experienced hotel managers and chefs is becoming increasingly difficult," said the chairman of the National Union of Tourist Agencies.

Section 2

Text 2 — Literary extract

A passage in the style of Bulgarian classic prose.

Kiril returned to his native village after twelve years. The road along which he walked was the same — cobbled, narrow, smelling of wet earth after the rain. But everything else had changed. The old tower of the mill, in which he had played as a child, no longer existed. In its place stood a modern residential building with aluminium windows and satellite dishes.

Grandma Maria — the woman whose yard was full of roses and basil, and who every morning sang old folk songs — no longer lived there. His neighbours told him she had died three years ago. Kiril stood for a long time before her former gate, without saying anything. Then he set off up the hill, towards the cemetery, from where the whole village could be seen.

Comprehension questionAnswer
Колко години отсъстваше Кирил?Дванадесет години.
Какво е стояло преди на мястото на жилищната сграда?Старата кула на мелницата.
Какво правеше баба Мария всяка сутрин?Пееше стари народни песни.
Накъде се отправи Кирил накрая?Нагоре по хълма, към гробището.

💡 Grammar points in Text 2

Notice the relative clauses: пътят, по който вървеше (the road along which he walked), кулата, в която беше играл (the tower in which he had played), жената, чийто двор (the woman whose yard). Also: imperfect throughout — ухаещ, стоеше, пееше — giving ongoing background. The aorist върна се, тръгна marks the completed narrative actions.
