💡 Learning tip — how to use live TV

Do not try to understand every word. Focus on one sentence at a time. News bulletins (новини) are the best starting point — the anchors speak clearly, use standard Sofia Bulgarian, and the on-screen graphics give you visual context. BNT 1 news airs at 09:00, 14:00 and 19:00 Sofia time (UTC+2, UTC+3 in summer).

Section 2

About БНТ — Българска национална телевизия

The history of Bulgarian state broadcasting from the first test transmission in 1954 to today's four-channel streaming service.

Българска национална телевизия (Bulgarian National Television) is Bulgaria's public broadcaster, operating under the Law on Radio and Television. It is funded partly by the state budget and partly by commercial revenue. BNT is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) — the same body that organises Eurovision — and is subject to editorial independence requirements under Bulgarian media law.

1954
First experimental transmissions
The Bulgarian Committee for Radio and Television conducted the first experimental television transmissions in Sofia using Soviet-supplied equipment. Coverage was limited to a small radius around the capital.
1959
Regular broadcasting begins — 26 December
Bulgarian Television began regular broadcasting on 26 December 1959 from a studio in Sofia. Early programming ran for just a few hours per day. This date is still celebrated as the founding of Bulgarian television.
1970s
Expansion and colour television
Colour broadcasting was introduced in the mid-1970s using the SECAM system. Programming expanded significantly with drama productions, documentaries, and children's content that are still fondly remembered today.
1989
The fall of communism — editorial transformation
After the fall of the Zhivkov regime in November 1989, BNT underwent rapid editorial transformation. Live broadcasts of the National Roundtable negotiations were among the most-watched events in Bulgarian television history. The broadcaster was renamed Българска национална телевизия.
1992
Law on Radio and Television — editorial independence
Bulgaria adopted its first post-communist broadcasting law, establishing the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) as the independent regulatory body. BNT was formally constituted as a public broadcaster with statutory editorial independence from the government.
2000s
Satellite and digital expansion
BNT launched satellite broadcasting to reach the Bulgarian diaspora across Europe and beyond. BNT Sat (later renamed BNT 4) was established specifically to serve Bulgarians living abroad, maintaining a connection to Bulgarian language and culture.
2013
Digital switchover — DVB-T
Bulgaria completed the switch from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T), freeing spectrum and allowing higher quality transmission. BNT expanded its channel offering and improved HD coverage across the country.
2020s
Online streaming and catch-up TV
BNT launched bnt.bg with full live streaming and an extensive on-demand archive. All four channels are now available globally via the web — making BNT an invaluable resource for Bulgarian language learners and diaspora communities worldwide.

Section 3

How to use live TV for language learning

Strategies that actually work at B1 level — the research-backed approach to learning from authentic media.

Start with news — not drama
News anchors use standard Bulgarian, speak at a measured pace, and stay on topic. Drama uses colloquial speech, slang and fast cuts. Start with BNT 1 новини (news) until you can follow 50% comfortably.
Watch the same bulletin twice
Watch the 9:00 and 14:00 bulletins — they often cover the same stories. Hearing the same vocabulary repeated in different contexts doubles your retention without extra effort.
Use the lower thirds (subtitles)
News graphics and lower-third captions give you written Bulgarian to match to the spoken word. This is the best training your eyes and ears will get simultaneously.
Write down three new words per session
Do not try to understand everything. Set a goal of three new words per viewing session. Pause, write them in Cyrillic, look them up and say them aloud three times. That is sustainable progress.
Children's programmes on BNT 2
Bulgarian children's TV uses simple vocabulary, clear pronunciation and repetitive structures — exactly what adult learners need. It is not beneath you. It is efficient input.
Documentaries on BNT 1
Bulgarian history and nature documentaries use formal, precise language and often have on-screen text reinforcing key facts. They are ideal for expanding vocabulary in Bulgarian history — also tested in the citizenship exam.
