🌏 Setting the scene
Directions in Bulgaria are often given through landmarks, not just street numbers. In Sofia people may send you towards НДК, булевард Витоша or Орлов мост. In Plovdiv, locals talk about Главната and the Old Town. In Varna and Burgas, the Морската градина is one of the main orientation points.
This means that getting around well in Bulgaria is partly language and partly cultural knowledge. The goal of this lesson is not just to say left and right, but to understand how real Bulgarian city directions actually sound.

💡 Не разбрах — your most useful phrase
When you don't understand directions, Не разбрах. Може ли по-бавно? (I didn't understand. Could you repeat more slowly?) is essential. Also useful: Можете ли да го повторите? (Could you repeat it?) and Можете ли да го напишете? (Could you write it down?). Bulgarians are extremely helpful to visitors who ask with basic politeness.

Giving directions — building a full route description
How to string multiple steps into a clear route.
Giving a multi-step route uses sequencing words (първо, после, след това, накрая) combined with direction phrases. The imperative is used throughout — the formal plural (завийте, вървете, пресечете) for strangers, the informal singular (завий, върви, пресечи) for friends.

🚶 Bulgarian route logic
Real Bulgarian directions usually combine movement with landmarks: след светофара, до спирката, срещу банката, покрай парка. In old centres and residential areas, this is often much more useful than a precise street number.
Here is a model multi-step direction using all these elements:
Излезте от хотела и завийте надясно. Вървете направо по тази улица около пет минути. Минете покрай супермаркета. На следващото кръстовище завийте наляво. Ще видите голям парк вляво. Вървете покрай парка. Музеят е на ъгъла — голяма жълта сграда срещу пощата. Не може да го изпуснете.
Izlezte ot hotela i zaviyte nadyasno. Varvete napravo po tazi ulitsa okolo pet minuti. Minete pokray supermarketa. Na sledvashtoto krastovishte zaviyte nalyavo. Shte vidite golyam park vlyavo. Varvete pokray parka. Muzeyat e na agala — golyama zhalto sgrada sreshtu poshtata. Ne mozhe da go izpusnete.
Come out of the hotel and turn right. Walk straight along this street for about five minutes. Go past the supermarket. At the next crossroads turn left. You will see a large park on the left. Walk along the park. The museum is on the corner — a large yellow building opposite the post office. You can't miss it.

💡 Why this matters
If someone says Слез на Орлов мост or Върви към Морската градина, you need cultural context as much as vocabulary. This is one of the places where language and local knowledge meet.
