Driving Style

Alex Albon possesses one of the most adaptable and intelligent driving styles on the Formula 1 grid. His ability to extract performance from difficult and uncompetitive cars is perhaps unmatched in the current field, a skill honed through years of driving Williams machinery that required creative approaches to maximise results. Albon's smooth driving technique is particularly effective at managing tyre wear, allowing him to run longer stints and execute alternative strategies that often produce results beyond what the car's raw pace would suggest.

Albon's racecraft is excellent, combining patient tyre management with decisive overtaking when the opportunity presents itself. He is remarkably good at reading the evolving dynamics of a race and positioning himself to benefit from safety cars, virtual safety cars, and competitors' mistakes. His defensive driving is strong without being excessively aggressive, and his ability to maintain composure under wheel-to-wheel pressure reflects the mental resilience developed through the challenging experience of being dropped by Red Bull Racing. Albon is also known for his excellent car development feedback, making him a valuable asset to any team's engineering efforts.

Career

Born on 23 March 1996 in London, England, Alexander Albon grew up with dual Thai-British nationality, competing under the Thai flag in honour of his mother's heritage. His early karting career showed enormous promise, and he rose through the junior categories with support from the Red Bull Junior Team, though he was initially released from the programme before being re-signed after strong performances in Formula 2.

Albon made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2019 and was promoted to Red Bull Racing mid-season to replace Pierre Gasly. While he showed flashes of genuine pace at Red Bull, including memorable drives from the back of the grid, he ultimately struggled to match Max Verstappen's level consistently and was replaced by Sergio Perez for 2021. Rather than disappearing from the sport, Albon spent a year as Red Bull's reserve and test driver before securing a remarkable comeback with Williams for 2022.

At Williams, Albon has been a revelation. He consistently outperforms the car's expected position, regularly scoring points in a machine that has no right to be in the top ten. His performances have drawn admiration from across the paddock and kept his name in conversations about potential moves to more competitive teams. Albon's popularity extends beyond the track — his warm personality, relationship with his cats, and engaging social media presence have made him one of the most well-liked figures in the paddock. He remains one of the most underrated drivers in Formula 1.
