Team History

Scuderia Ferrari is the oldest and most successful team in Formula 1 history. Founded by Enzo Ferrari, the Maranello-based outfit has competed in every season of the World Championship since its inception in 1950. No other team can match Ferrari’s legacy, passion, or the sheer devotion of the tifosi — the Italian fans who treat every Grand Prix as a national event.

Ferrari’s early dominance came through the genius of Alberto Ascari, who won back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953. The team remained a front-running force throughout the 1950s and 1960s, with legends such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, and John Surtees all winning championships in the iconic red cars. Niki Lauda revived Ferrari’s fortunes in the 1970s, claiming titles in 1975 and 1977, while Jody Scheckter took the crown in 1979.

After a long championship drought, Ferrari entered a golden era in the late 1990s when Michael Schumacher joined from Benetton. Together with technical director Ross Brawn and designer Rory Byrne, Schumacher turned Ferrari into an unstoppable machine. He won five consecutive Drivers’ Championships from 2000 to 2004, and the team claimed six straight Constructors’ titles from 1999 to 2004 — the most dominant period in modern F1 history.

Kimi Räikkönen added another Drivers’ title in 2007, and Ferrari remained competitive through the 2010s with Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, though the ultimate prize proved elusive. Under team principal Frédéric Vasseur, Ferrari have rebuilt their technical department and made the landmark signing of Lewis Hamilton for 2025 — arguably the biggest driver transfer in the sport’s history. With Hamilton and Leclerc driving side by side, Ferrari enter 2026 with genuine championship aspirations as the sport begins a radical new technical era.
