Team History

Mercedes-AMG Petronas returned to Formula 1 as a full works constructor in 2010, purchasing the championship-winning Brawn GP team. Under the leadership of team principal Toto Wolff and with the engineering brilliance of technical directors Paddy Lowe and later James Allison, Mercedes embarked on one of the most dominant periods in the history of motorsport.

The team’s first few seasons were spent building the foundations, with Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg driving for the Silver Arrows. The real breakthrough came in 2014 when Formula 1 introduced the turbo-hybrid power unit regulations. Mercedes had invested heavily in their engine programme at Brixworth, and the result was devastating superiority. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg engaged in a fierce intra-team rivalry that captivated the world, with Hamilton winning the 2014 and 2015 titles before Rosberg clinched the 2016 championship and promptly retired.

From 2017 onwards, Hamilton became the undisputed lead driver and proceeded to rewrite the record books. He claimed four more titles with Mercedes (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of seven World Championships. The team won an unprecedented eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships from 2014 to 2021, a record that may never be surpassed. During this period, Mercedes won over 100 races and set benchmarks for power unit performance, aerodynamic efficiency, and strategic excellence.

The 2022 ground-effect regulation changes ended Mercedes’ dominance, with the team struggling with porpoising and correlation issues. Hamilton departed for Ferrari at the end of 2024, and Mercedes promoted the prodigiously talented teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli to partner George Russell for 2025 and beyond. With the 2026 regulations bringing a completely new power unit formula — an area where Mercedes have historically excelled — the Brackley team are determined to reclaim their position at the top of the sport.
