Team History

The Haas F1 Team is the brainchild of Gene Haas, the American industrialist and founder of Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in the Western world. Haas entered Formula 1 in 2016 with a unique business model that had never been attempted at this level of the sport — rather than designing and manufacturing every component in-house, the team partnered closely with Ferrari, purchasing as many listed parts as the regulations permitted and focusing their own resources on aerodynamic development.

This innovative approach allowed Haas to be competitive from day one. In their very first race at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean finished sixth — the best debut result for a new constructor in decades. The team’s first few seasons showed flashes of genuine pace, with Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen regularly scoring points and occasionally challenging for top-five finishes. The 2018 season was particularly strong, with the team finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.

However, the team faced significant challenges in the years that followed. A troubled 2019 campaign was compounded by the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and a disastrous sponsorship deal with Uralkali that soured in early 2022 following geopolitical events. The team endured a difficult 2021 season while focusing resources on the 2022 rule changes, which paid off with a marked improvement in competitiveness. Magnussen scored a stunning fifth place on his return to the team at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

A new chapter began in 2024 when long-serving engineer Ayao Komatsu was promoted to team principal, replacing Günther Steiner, whose colourful leadership had become famous through Netflix’s Drive to Survive series. Komatsu brought a more measured, engineering-led approach to the team. For 2025, Haas signed experienced race winner Esteban Ocon alongside exciting British teenager Oliver Bearman, who had impressed enormously during substitute appearances for Ferrari in 2024. With continued Ferrari technical support and Komatsu’s steady hand, Haas are targeting consistent points finishes and a push towards the top of the midfield as the 2026 regulations offer an opportunity to close the gap to the established front-runners.
