Team History
RB, formerly known as AlphaTauri and Scuderia Toro Rosso before that, is Red Bull’s sister team in Formula 1. The operation is based in the picturesque Italian town of Faenza, occupying the same factory that was once home to the Minardi team, one of Formula 1’s most beloved underdogs. Red Bull acquired Minardi at the end of 2005 and rebranded it as Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2006 season.
The team’s primary purpose has always been to develop young talent from the Red Bull Junior programme. This model has produced some of the most exciting drivers in modern F1 history. Sebastian Vettel delivered a famous shock victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix at Monza in treacherous wet conditions, becoming the youngest race winner in F1 history at the time. That performance earned him a promotion to Red Bull Racing, where he went on to win four consecutive World Championships.
The pathway continued with Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon all passing through the Faenza team on their way to bigger roles. Gasly achieved his own fairy-tale victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, one of the most emotional moments in recent F1 history. The team was rebranded as AlphaTauri in 2020, named after Red Bull’s fashion brand, before being simplified to RB for 2024 under the Visa Cash App sponsorship.
Under team principal Laurent Mekies, who joined from Ferrari, RB continues to serve as both a competitive midfield team and a development pathway for Red Bull’s next generation. Yuki Tsunoda has matured into a consistent points scorer and team leader, while Isack Hadjar arrives as the latest graduate from the Red Bull Junior programme, having impressed in Formula 2. With the new Ford-badged power unit shared with the senior Red Bull team for 2026, RB are well positioned to continue their role as one of the most important talent incubators in the sport.
