Team History

The team that races today as Aston Martin Aramco has a long and complex lineage in Formula 1. Its roots trace back to Jordan Grand Prix, founded by Eddie Jordan in 1991, which became one of the most colourful and competitive independent teams on the grid. Jordan evolved into Midland in 2006, then Spyker in 2007, before being purchased by Indian businessman Vijay Mallya and rebranded as Force India in 2008.

Force India became one of the great underdog stories in Formula 1. Operating on one of the smallest budgets in the paddock, the Silverstone-based team consistently punched above their weight. Drivers such as Adrian Sutil, Paul di Resta, Nico Hülkenberg, Sergio Pérez, and Esteban Ocon delivered remarkable results, with the team finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2016 and 2017. However, financial difficulties led to the team entering administration in 2018.

Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll led a consortium that rescued the team, initially renaming it Racing Point for the 2019 season. Racing Point scored a shock victory at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix with Pérez and demonstrated strong pace with a car that drew heavily on the dominant Mercedes design philosophy. For 2021, Stroll rebranded the operation as Aston Martin, bringing the legendary British sports car manufacturer back to Formula 1 for the first time since 1960.

The arrival of two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso in 2023 added star power and experience to the project. Alonso delivered eight podiums in his first season with the team, a remarkable achievement for a midfield outfit. Lawrence Stroll has invested hundreds of millions into a brand-new factory and wind tunnel facility at Silverstone, alongside recruiting top technical talent including former Red Bull aerodynamicist Dan Fallows. With a switch to Honda power units for the 2026 regulations, Aston Martin are building towards their stated goal of challenging for World Championships within the coming years.
