Driving Style

Lance Stroll's driving style is built around strong wet-weather ability and impressive straight-line performance. His feel for changing track conditions has produced some of his best results, including his remarkable podium in the treacherous 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and his pole position at a rain-soaked Istanbul in 2020. Stroll is notably strong in the early phases of races, often making up positions on the opening lap through good starts and confident first-corner positioning.

Stroll's approach to racing has matured considerably over his years in the sport. His braking technique has improved, and his consistency over race distances has become more reliable. He is an effective team player who can execute strategies cleanly and bring the car home in the points when the machinery allows it. His qualifying pace, historically his weaker area, has shown improvement under the guidance of Aston Martin's engineering team. Stroll's ability to perform at high-speed circuits, where bravery and commitment are paramount, remains one of his underappreciated strengths, and his experience now counts for more than many give him credit for.

Career

Born on 29 October 1998 in Montreal, Canada, Lance Stroll is the son of billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll, whose passion for motorsport eventually led to his purchase of the Force India team, transforming it into the Aston Martin works team. Lance's path to Formula 1 was supported by significant financial backing, but his junior formula results were genuine: he won the Italian Formula 4 Championship and the European Formula 3 Championship before stepping up to F1 with Williams in 2017 at the age of 18.

Stroll's debut season produced a memorable podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he became the youngest rookie podium finisher at that time and the youngest front-row starter in F1 history after qualifying on the front row. His time at Williams was a period of learning, often overshadowed by the team's declining competitiveness. The move to what was then Racing Point in 2019, and subsequently Aston Martin, placed him in a more supportive environment under his father's team ownership.

The 2020 season represented Stroll's best in F1, highlighted by a stunning pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix in torrential rain and a podium in Bahrain. While results have fluctuated since then, Stroll remains a consistent points scorer when the car is competitive. His relationship with the team provides stability and continuity, and he has developed into an experienced driver who contributes meaningfully to car development. The arrival of Fernando Alonso as his teammate has provided both a benchmark and a learning opportunity, and Stroll continues to push for stronger results in Aston Martin's ambitious project to become championship contenders.
