Driving Style

Pierre Gasly is a driver whose style is defined by determination, precision, and an ability to maximise the potential of his machinery regardless of where it sits in the competitive order. His approach to racing is characterised by strong qualifying laps that consistently place him higher than the car's pace might suggest, combined with aggressive first-lap positioning that frequently gains him places. Gasly is particularly effective at managing the opening phase of a race, using his excellent spatial awareness to find gaps and establish track position.

In terms of pure driving technique, Gasly is smooth with his inputs and manages tyre degradation well over race distances. His ability to maintain concentration and performance across a full grand prix distance, even when running in isolation in the midfield, speaks to a mental resilience that was forged through the difficult experience of being dropped from Red Bull Racing. Gasly's racecraft in wheel-to-wheel situations has become increasingly refined, and his ability to defend positions under pressure is among the best in the midfield. He drives with a sense of purpose and emotional commitment that makes him a compelling competitor.

Career

Born on 7 February 1996 in Rouen, France, Pierre Jean-Georges Gasly has experienced more dramatic highs and lows in his relatively young Formula 1 career than most drivers encounter in a lifetime. Growing up in Normandy, Gasly fell in love with racing through karting and quickly progressed through the European junior categories. He won the GP2 Series championship in 2016, earning his shot at Formula 1 with Toro Rosso in 2018.

Gasly's early F1 career was overshadowed by a difficult promotion to Red Bull Racing in 2019, where he struggled to match Max Verstappen's pace and was demoted back to Toro Rosso mid-season. What could have been a career-ending blow instead became the foundation for one of F1's most remarkable comeback stories. Gasly responded with stunning form at the renamed AlphaTauri, producing the result of a lifetime at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he won an extraordinary race from behind to claim his first F1 victory in an emotionally charged finish. The win came at a circuit laden with personal significance, as Gasly's close friend Anthoine Hubert had died in a Formula 2 race at Spa just a year earlier.

After establishing himself as one of the strongest performers outside the top teams, Gasly moved to Alpine for 2023, seeking a new challenge with the French manufacturer. The transition has been mixed, with Alpine's competitiveness fluctuating as the team restructures its technical operations. Despite the challenges, Gasly remains a proven race winner and a driver capable of exceptional performances when the opportunity arises. His resilience and dedication to his craft continue to earn him respect throughout the paddock.
