Driving Style

Yuki Tsunoda drives with an intensity and fire that makes him one of the most entertaining drivers on the Formula 1 grid. His style is aggressive and committed, characterised by late braking, tight lines through corners, and an uncompromising approach to wheel-to-wheel racing. Tsunoda is at his best when he is in the thick of battle, feeding off the adrenaline of close competition. His compact frame — he is the shortest driver on the grid — gives him a weight advantage that translates into a measurable performance benefit, particularly in the acceleration zones.

Tsunoda's driving has matured considerably since his sometimes erratic rookie season in 2021. His consistency has improved dramatically, and he has channelled his natural aggression into more productive outcomes. His qualifying pace has become a genuine weapon, regularly placing the RB car higher in the order than expected. Tsunoda's tyre management, once a weakness, has developed into a solid aspect of his skill set. His radio communications remain famously colourful and passionate, but behind the emotional outbursts lies a driver of genuine talent who is approaching the peak of his abilities.

Career

Born on 11 May 2000 in Sagamihara, Japan, Yuki Tsunoda grew up watching Formula 1 with dreams of becoming Japan's next grand prix racing star. He began karting at age four and quickly established himself as one of the brightest talents in Japanese junior motorsport. Spotted by Honda's young driver programme, Tsunoda was given the opportunity to race in Europe, competing in Formula 3 and Formula 2 where he demonstrated the raw speed that would earn him an F1 seat.

Tsunoda's Formula 1 debut in 2021 with AlphaTauri was explosive — he scored points on his very first race weekend in Bahrain, exciting fans with his aggressive driving and entertaining radio messages. His rookie season was a rollercoaster of brilliant highs and frustrating lows, characterised by impressive speed coupled with too many errors and incidents. The team's decision to relocate him to Faenza, Italy, to be closer to the factory, reflected their commitment to developing his talent.

The investment has paid off. Tsunoda has grown into one of the most consistent midfield performers, regularly outpacing his teammates and extracting results from the RB machinery. His podium finishes have validated the faith Honda and Red Bull placed in him, and he has established himself as a fan favourite through his passionate driving and unfiltered personality. As Honda's primary representative on the grid, Tsunoda carries the hopes of Japanese motorsport fans and has become an important figure in F1's growing popularity in Japan.
